Brodovitch is one of my favourite designers of all time. Discovered him in high school while reading Bazaar. I’d like to think I ended up pursuing graphic design because of him. So of course I was delighted when, on first opening his monograph, I found all the captions lovingly set in Futura. And so nicely contrasted with Bodoni! It’s really the perfect typeface for captions, I think: it’s still highly readable at small sizes, but with a bit of personality. Does there exist a better typeface for captions?* If you say Avenir, you’re a wimp. Avenir is for the kind of people who drink decaf, or go to Nandos and order their chicken with “lemon and herb” sauce. What is the point, really…
*Actually, Museo is pretty nice for captions too. Not even in the sans version, but the original, just leave those friendly kicks in. Looks great in 6pt. I was quite surprised! I like it because it’s so practical, but with personality. Just like Futura.
